CARPET
Main Carpet Fibers
When you’re purchasing new carpet, choosing the right fiber for its intended location can make all the difference.
Wool Carpet
Wool is very durable, “green”, and soft, but usually double or triple the cost of the more common types of carpet fibers and cost prohibitive for most people. Wool is the most expensive of all carpet fibers.
Nylon Carpet
This fiber is considered by industry experts to be the most durable for foot traffic. It is soft and comes in a large variety of styles and colors. Since nylon is a fiber, it is prone to stains.
Polyester Carpet
When constructed in a Continuous Filament Platform this fiber is a nice “bang for your buck” alternative to nylon. You will get more carpet for a better cost. Most of these carpets are made with recycled beverage bottles so they are “green” and inherently stain resistant (ever see a stain on a soda bottle?). Even so, most of the Continuous Filament Polyesters that we sell are treated with a stain treatment for extra stain protection.
SmartStrand
Currently, Mohawk is the only U.S. company making carpet made of triexta, branded SmartStrand. Triexta is as strong as nylon and will perform as well as, or better than, a nylon of equivalent quality. Perfect for a busy household.
Olefin
A basic carpet fiber made from plastic that is very stain resistant but not as soft as some of the other fibers and will crush faster.
Benefits of Carpet
While every flooring product has its advantages and drawbacks, carpet has several distinct benefits.
Style
From luxurious and elegant to casual and comfy, carpet can give a space an entirely different feel, just by changing the style of carpet. Consider a short-pile, patterned carpet for a formal room or a long frieze for a more casual space.
Comfort & Warmth
In addition to feeling nice to walk, sit and lay on, carpet provides shock absorption thanks to its flexibility and cushioning. So, not only is carpet more comfortable to the touch, but it is also easier on the body when standing or walking on it over a long period of time. Plus, carpet provides excellent insulation value to a space, much more than hard surface flooring materials.
Quiet
Carpets contribute to a much quieter space. Sound carries much further when there is no carpet in the space. This is because hard surfaces can’t absorb sound the way that soft surfaces – such as carpet – can.
Safety
It goes without saying that hard surfaces can be slippery, and they’re not much fun to land on when slips and falls do happen. Carpet not only provides a soft landing surface – which can be especially helpful in baby’s rooms – it also helps to prevent some falls in the first place, particularly on stairs.
Health
It was once thought that hardwood floors made for better air quality in rooms. However, newer research has shown that carpets trap and immobilize allergenic particles, and prevent them from being breathed in.
